Here's why it matters

An electrocardiogram (EKG or ECG) is a test that records the electrical activity of the heart. It helps healthcare providers detect and study heart problems such as heart attacks, arrhythmias, and heart failure.

After recording an ECG, students should know how to identify waveform irregularities and respond appropriately (e.g., informing the healthcare provider, retaking the ECG due to artifacts, and so forth).

To be successful, students must understand the ECG's layout, how the grid works, and the anatomy of the cardiac waveforms.
